David by Michelangelo with jockey shorts 47" H

 David   by Michelangelo  L'Academia, Florence
Michelangelo began work on the colossal figure of David in 1501, and by 1504 the sculpture was in place outside the Palazzo Vecchio. The choice of David was supposed to reflect the power and determination of Republican Florence and was under constant attack from supporters of the usurped Medicis. In the 19th century the statue was moved to the Accademia.
Photo at the left is the 48" H David, museum quality reproduction by Kosmolux.
Note: After viewers through the windows of our gallery complained to our landlord about the nudity, we decided to outfit David with some jockey shorts. Sorry! But you've got to have a sense of humor to make it in this crazy world of art.

It is sad to say that in the 21st century in the U.S. if you acquire a copy of the most famous statue in the world, you may be accused of being homosexual, a pervert, or worse. But, if you are one of those enlightened indivuduals who are not terrorized at the sight of the human body, you will rise above these petty attacks and collect and display the art that pleases you.

The smaller sizes of this figure are supplied to us by Egregia. In our opinion, the Egregia figures are undoubtedly the highest quality. We have a few of the similar item from ISAC or Santini at a lower price. If you want the larger size (48' or life-size) you will find that the Kosmolux figures imported from italy are superb! And, if you want a David that is almost seven feet tall, we can provide you with a fiberglass version at a very reasonable price. You decide what you want. We can provide whatever that is at the best value price on the internet.    -- Will Murray

91" High David by Michelangelo in Fiberglass

The Biblical character of David was taken as a symbol of the city of Florence, it was almost an epitome of the Renaissance ideal. Man had newly awakened to an interest in man himself, to an admiration of his inherent power and capability.

W
hat a piece of work is man! How noble in reason! How infinite in faculty! In form and moving how expressive and admirable! In action how like an angel! In apprehension how like a god! The beauty of the world!" Shakespeare through the mouth of Hamlet expressed in words that which Michelangelo with his David expressed in marble.

In 1501 the twenty-six year old Michelangelo was given an eighteen foot block of marble that had been hacked at by other sculptors and which had lain for thirty-five years in the cathedral work yard. Out of it he was to fashion a statue of David. Donatello and Verrocchio before him had in Florence made notable interpretations of David but Michelangelo's was destined to be of a very different nature. His David emerged from the stone, not as a small, brave adolescent who had already killed Goliath, but as a young man, at the peak of physical strength who is ready to go forth to conquer the giant; an apotheosis of heroic qualities. He appears the perfection of a man -- a man noble in reason, expressive and admirable in body! As in the Pieta, Michelangelo the master of anatomy, distorts to convey. The enlarged right hand tells us of his courage and physical power.
